Cam for IMCA stockcar 500cfm engine

First build on one of these engines and wondering if you fellows would share some advice on some good cam specs. Would welcome any other advice you could give about how much to flat mill the EQ heads. Pistons are srp flattops and are .003 from the deck. Thanks guys

What intake areyou going to use??
Can you angle mill the heads by the rules?
What valve size can be used???
Need more details regarding what the rest of the parts are you have to work with.

flat mill the heads .080. cam something in the mid 240's i'd do a 246in 246ex on a 100ic if using a 6 inch rod. try to get .550 or so lift. use the edelbrock intake.

Here's the cam that's working best with the EQ heads and Edelbrock intake.
Part# M73359-75344X-106
248/244@.050"
.359"/.344" Lobe Lift
106 LSA

Here is a grind that is working well for several of my local racers:
275/284 @.020"
250/248 @.050"
162/156 @.200"
.540"/.527" w/1.5 rockers
107 LSA
102 ICL
You will need to use a specific PAC spring with these lobes and I would advise you to use the ARP Professional series studs as well.

a trick i've found is to use a head stud washer (7/16) under the hex of the stud to raise it up. this creates less leaverage on the stud since the rocker will be closer to the base. i also use the pac spring and arp studs. dont you love stupid rules? lol

Yea lets put a 7400 chip in them but make them run a 3/8 stud... Gotta love Brett and the boys!

kinda wondering how you guys spec cams without knowing or giving a rpm range??
Mike: would that sorta setup with the bigger intake work for me with the 500 holley/2101 and exhaust manifolds and low compression??

The RPM is limited by the valvetrain on these IMCA engines

Depends on the RPM range, the rocker ratio, and springs available.

actually the 7400 chip is the limiter. we've seen them pulled as high as 7800 on the track and pulling away fast before the chip rule.

they dont, but coming off the corner 500rpm higher than the next guy does lots of good.

With that manifold, they'd get their arse handed to them by a good engine designed to turn 7,200rpm, unless the track is extremely small.
At the average track, you want to be turning no more then 7,200, andcome offthe corner around 4,500.

Actually at the smaller tracks the bigger engines with the 350 cfm carb still dominate. Last year before the chip rule the 500 carb could stay pretty close even on the shorter tracks because there was no compression limit and no chip rule.
Some of the 350 carb engines can still out run them even on the 1/2 mile tracks. They are pretty close, but I have never seen an engine win a race.

Most ignorant comment I've seen in months.
We all know it takes more then engine, but I've worked with some of the top drivers in the world, and every single one of them wanted more power. Some wanted more off the corners, some wanted a flat torque curve that carried the power, but not one ever wanted less power.
